Wellness Tourism in France

France has a long spa tradition in wellness tourism, however, the word spa has a slightly different meaning here. Spa, which comes from the Latin word satinus per aqua, translates to "health through water", and so water plays an important role in French wellness and wellness tourism, with many spas focusing on thermal treatments and therapies.

From the Alps to the Côte d'Azur to the lavender fields of Provence, beautiful spa resorts with facials, Turkish baths and intoxicating aromatherapy massages captivate guests and wellness tourists. Whether by the sea, in the mountains or through the fields, there are some activities you can only do in France.

The Normandy region is home to stunning horse riding and cycling trails along the Seine Valley. The Normandy region is full of diverse landscapes and offers some of France’s best health and wellness destinations, such as Trouville. The town has a casual seaside lifestyle and plenty of water activities to keep you busy. It’s no surprise that it’s also home to some of the best thalassotherapy centres and spas, where you can experience the ultimate in wellness.

The last stretch of French coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, with its open beach breaks, is a world-class surfing spot. Thalassotherapy, which uses the benefits of the sea for therapeutic purposes, dates back to ancient times, but the first treatments were invented on the Basque coast. During a thalassotherapy stay, the body and mind are liberated with the help of the mineral salts found in the sea water and the benefits of beneficial treatments such as seaweed and mud masks, massages and various fitness programs. Wellness tourism is developing in France with such programs and locations.
